Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry and Preclinical Drug Discovery
Position Summary

Postdoctoral Fellowship opening in the area of synthetic medicinal chemistry under the direction of Amol Kulkarni, PhD. Projects will include the development of small molecule inhibitors in the field of virology and immunology. The ongoing projects in the group include development of small molecule inhibitors of HIV-1 Nef, protein phosphatase-1 and the NLRP3 inflammasome.

The postdoctoral fellow will be involved in research planning and execution. The responsibilities include retrosynthetic analysis and forward synthesis of complex small molecules, characterization of intermediates and final compounds using spectroscopic and chromatographic procedures, mentoring high school, undergraduate, and graduare students in the group, writing manuscripts for scientific publications, presentations at scientific meetings, and writing reports for the funding agencies.

Candidates with strong background in organic/medicinal chemistry, drug design, chromatography, spectroscopy and student mentoring are strongly encouraged to apply. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups are encouraged to apply for this position. The postdoctoral fellow will join a collegial, interdisciplinary team actively engaged in drug discovery and preclinical drug development. Current collaborations include virology groups in Howard and The George Washington Universities, immunology group in University of Houston, and computational chemistry group at Mercer University. The position thus offers strong interdisciplinary mentorship and research experience.

The initial appointment is for one year, with reappointment for a second year provided satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Position Summary Each post-doctoral research associate will directly manage a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a web-based HIV/STI prevention intervention with sexual minority male couples. Primary responsibilities will include: administrative; recruitment and retention efforts; data management with some analysis; assistance with dissemination of findings.
